Altered Cigar Box

Last week I was searching for items I could use in my art, at a local antique store, and found this wonderful wooden cigar box for $2.50.  I also found some tiny bottle brush trees that I hope to use with a Christmas or winter scene in the future.  Pink Persimmon sells these adorable little chipboard houses, Vintage Colonial House by Melissa Frances and I have been wanting some.  Now I have to get them so I can use my little trees!!  Do you ever go to "antique stores" looking for great finds like these??  Not all of it is "antiques".  And you know what they say, "One man's junk is another man's treasure".  You have to be careful though.  Some of that stuff is priced crazy.

I knew as soon as I seen the cigar box what I was going to do with it, because it has been one of those projects I've been planning on creating for a while.  I wanted to make a gift card set for my sweet mother-in-laws birthday in november and had been considering what I would store them in.

I used "Butterfly Collector" and an art stencil - "Botanical Swirls",  by Layers of Color.

If you have been following me for very long, then you know I LOVE butterflies.  And this set by Layers of Color is so gorgeous.  Especially that medallion.  Wanna see my butterfly shadow box I created earlier in the year??  Check it out HERE.  Sorry to get off subject, but it is one of my most favorite projects I have ever created and enjoyed seeing it as I walked through my diningroom this spring.  I even wrote a little poem to go with it with the intentions of creating a framed project using the poem, to set beside my butterfly box.  I'll have to add that next spring!

Tutorial
This project was a little messy to create, but worth it.  I could have just used patterned paper, but wanted more of a handmade, textured feel.  So, I created my own background.

I honestly wasn't sure where I was going when I began the process and the end result was an accumulation of errors and layering color until I got the look I wanted.  So I will describe the process the best that I can, but know that what you should take from this is that sometimes you just have to sit down and play with color and mediums until you get the look you want.  My first panel turned out horrible.  But I learned from that and I'm very pleased with the results of my second panel.

I started with a heavy cold pressed watercolor paper and trimmed to the size of the top of the box.  I watered down some acrylic paint, Making Memories Wisteria and brushed it over the paper.  I completely covered it with this wash and then let it dry.  Then I used my stencil to create some texture.  I used stencil adhesive, but the modeling paste is so thick, it might not be necessary.  Sorry, I haven't tested it.  With a palette knife (Just a plastic knife with a bent handle for easier handling.  Found in local craft store in the art section for about $1.  Well worth it, because that angled handled really helps) I spread light modeling paste (also found in the art section of local craft store) over the stencil.  Use the palette knife to level the paste and wipe off the excess.  Let this dry.  I really rushed mine and used a heat gun to help it along, because I had to move the stencil over to cover the entire panel.  You can see the raised area's created with the modeling paste a little better in this photo.

Next I realized I wanted two shades of purple.  So I used a stipple brush to pounce on another purple, Brilliance Pearlescent Purple.  These inks have just a little shimmer to them.  I inked up the Tim Holtz applicator tool with Pearlescent Chocolate and gently began adding it to the raised, modeling paste design.  Some of the ink got on the background, but that was ok.  I also distressed up the edges with it as well.  Then I decided I wanted to use gold as an accent, so I added a little gold pigment ink to the background.  It didn't really show up very well.  At this point I decided I had covered up too much of the lightest color purple I started with and began to pounce on some Brilliance Moonlight White to lighten some of the area's.  See how this process works, teehee.  And lastly I wanted the modeling paste swirls to stand out a little more. So I used a tiny paint brush and began adding Shimmerz Golden Wheat and Shimmerz Blingz Gold Glimmer here and there.  I didn't want to cover all of the swirls, because I wanted different shades.  By this time I had a mess and took a break to clean up the stencil / palette knife and my stipple brushes.

I found a very old piece of DP in my stash by Colorbok that was a little lighter purple than the background.  I stamped my butterflies with Pearlescent Chocolate (This is my all time favorite brown ink.  I use it all the time, especially around the edge of images or projects to distress them).  Heat set.  Cut around edges with cuticle scissors (You have so much more control when cutting small images, or around curved lines, with cuticle scissors).  Add Shimmerz Golden Wheat and Lilac with a very small paint brush as shown.  If I got too much on a brown line, I used a tooth pick to scratch it off while it was still wet.  Add Stickles Glitz - Champayne to the little dots on the butterfly wings and on the body of the smaller butterflies.  Also add it to the outer border of the butterfly medallion.  Set this aside to dry.

Use Spellbinders Labels 1 and one of the Fancy Tags layered over one another to create a background for the butterfly pendant.

I realized that I needed  something in the corners so I found this really awesome Sizzlet set with decorative corners, Architectural Accents Set.  I think they turned out great!

After I finished the top panel, I painted the box brown.  I cut the side panels and ran them throught my Big Shot with a Cuttlebug embossing folder, then adhered them to the sides. I covered the top of the box with gold paper and then my butterfly panel.  I added these really awesome "feet".  They are by Tim Holtz.

There is nothing worse than having someone describe a process to you and not having an idea what they are talking about.  So, here are some photo's of some of the other tools I used to create this:

I like this stipple brush because the hairs are different lengths and soft.  Mine looks like this, but the handle is solid wood.  Unfortunately there is no manufacturer on the handle and I would love to find more of them.

I hope you were inspired to get really messy and try something new this week. If you find this tutorial inspiring and use it on a project of your own, I would love to see it!!
Thanks again for stopping by!

Artist Trading Cards

Artist Trading Cards, like inchies are little miniture pieces of art.  But you can pack a lot of on these 2.5" x 3.5" cards.  I love that they are a quick easy creative fix.  Like inchies, sometimes they are created to swap with other artist.   Last year I purchased a couple of the 7 Gypsies Revolving ATC Holders to store them on.

Aren't these cool!
This week I created 3 ATC's.  I was totally inspired by a book I purchased a while back.  "Artist Trading Card Workshop".

Not only was I inspired by the artistry / design of so many of the cards, but the book shares lots of background techniques as well.
I spend alot of time listening to and singing along with Contemporary Christian / Praise and Worship music in my car and while I"m creating.  My heart fills with joy as I sing songs of praise to my Saviour.  I love finding music and lyrics that express exactly what my heart wants to say.  So what better inspiration for a new series of ATC's than my love for God!  So here is what I created.

I created this one using Layers of Color stamp sets "Royal Birds" and "Regal Wings" (crown in background).  The background is created using paper towels.  I dampened the paper towel and layed it out on wax paper.  Then I applied watered down acrylic paints.  After it was dry I lightened some of the area's by rubbing on some white pigment ink.  Then I stamped the crowns with black pigment ink.  The paper towel gives you this cool textured background.

I designed this one using "Gothic Crosses" and " "Acanthus Leaves".  I started with thick watercolor paper.  I brushed on watered down acrylic paint in two colors, purple and green.  After it's dry I stamped the swirlies with VersaMagic Ink, sprinkled clear embossing powder and heat embossed.  Next I brushed on brown ink here and there.  Don't worry about covering the embossed area's.  After it is dry, place it on an ironing board, cover it with 1 piece of printer paper.  Iron over it with a very hot iron (no steam).  Mine was so hot, I only had to move it over the piece for about 3 seconds.  I could see the paint bleeding onto the the paper.  As you peel it off, and it removes some of the paint creating a distressed look.  Then I sanded some more of the brown off as well, exposing the paint below, until I got the distressed look I wanted.  I LOVE this technique!!

This is another version of the paper towel technique above.  I actually colored several paper towels with different color variations, so I have lots more left over to use in the future.  For this one, I used "Joyful Noise".
What do you think??  Are you ready to create and maybe even swap some ATC's??
There are alot of options for displaying your ATC's on the revolving holder.  The plain paper ones can sag a little.  I actually glue together when using them.  7 Gypsies sells alot of accessories which can be found at Your ATC Store.  I like the thicker chipboard refills best.  I don't have one of these yet, but may check them out - 7 Gypsies 2-ringed Chipboard Album.  Here is my idea for this cute little album:  Use it as a circle album.  Years ago "circle journals"  were the fad.  You joined a group of willing participates, purchased a small album, like a 6 x 6" and then mailed it around to one another.  You decided the theme of your album, and each participated created a page to go along with your theme.  Your album progressed through the group and eventually made it back to you (thus the circle).  It was so much fun to see all the wonderful art of the ladies in front of you as they mailed the albums to you one at a time.  It's one thing to see art online, but really wonderful to veiw it in person.  But it was even more fun when yours arrived back to you.   So contact some girlfriends and start your own Circle ATC Album Group today!
I hope you were inspired to pull out those old acrylic paints and get messy with some background techniques.  If you have any questions, just email me!
May God bless you with a joy and peace that only He can give!
hugs,
Melisa

Playdate Cafe Color Challenge

Good Morning.  This week Creative Cuts and More is sponsoring the Playdate Cafe Challenge.  So some of the DT have decided to play along.
The challenge was to use white, black, pink, gold.

Here's what you can win if you play along!

I used Creative Cuts and Mores Tuck and Close XL in one of the Curious Metallics - Gold Leaf.  I like this color because it's not a yellowish gold.  It has just a little sheen to it.
Patterned Paper - The Paper Studio (Hobby Lobby)
Border Punch - Martha Stewart
Ribbon - from recently purchased bedding
Gems - unknown
Metal embellishment - Making Memories

Tips and Techniques

I have a couple of tips for you with this project.
1.  The openings along the bottom from the border punch were not showing up against the gold bag.  So I used a Dove Blender Replacement tip to apply black ink.  It's tiny on the tip, so it fits in the holes perfectly.

2. I find it really difficult to cut the "v" shape in the end of the ribbon.  I did 2 things that made this easier.  First I created a template.

The template should be the length you want the end of the ribbon to be from the center knot x the width of the ribbon.  Mine is 2.5" x 2".   Now create the V.  I measured 1/2" from the end back toward the center knot and 1" from the sides (center of the ribbon).  This is where I placed a dot with my pencil.  Then cut from the outside ends to the dot in the center.

Fraying can really be an issue, so before I cut the "v"s I lightly dabbed some white glue on the back along the area I was going to be cutting.  This stiffened it up, making it easier to cut, and helps prevent fraying.

I hope you learned something that can help you on your crafty projects.
Thanks for stopping by!

Creative Belli #99

Good Morning.  It's time for another Creative Belli Challenge.  This week we are challenging you to drag out an old forgotten stamp and use it.
I am using one of my really old Technique Tuesday sentiment stamps and Close To My Heart stitch stamps.  These are 5+ years old.  The butterfly is newer from "Butterfly Collector"set by Layers of Color.

The card base is by Creative Cuts and More.  It's one of their "gift cards" and has slots on the inside to hold a gift card.  See photo at bottom of post.

We would love to have you join us over on the Creative Belli Blog.  Hop on over and check out all the DT inspiration and play along!

Inchies and Twinchies

Hello Papercrafters.  I spent the day yesterday working on inchies and twinchies.  Not familiar with the term??  They are little mini works of art either 1" or 2" square.  There are lots of paper crafters out there that swap them.  Some collect them as is, but they can be used on other paper projects as well.  There are even 2 challenge blogs that focus on these little pieces of art.  Inchy by Inch and Small World of Inches and Twinches.  I have designed 3 cards with inchy layouts, and 3 twinchies.  I also have a tower of inchies that I made last year and adhered to wooden blocks.

This was so easy to put together.  I used a leaf stamp from the "Vintage Roses" set by Layers of Color and one of the sqaure window cards by Creative Cuts and More.  CCM makes wonderful pre-cut window cards for inchies and twinches.  This one is the A2 Square Borders Window Card.  I adhered my 3 inchies inside the card. Isn't it cute how they peek through the window.
Other inchie window cards are :
Check out this page for even more Square Window Cards for inchies and twinchies HERE.

I'm linking this one to :

I used 6 inchies on this one.  See how versatile these little cuties are.  For this one, I used 4 of the inchies with one stamp.  I adhered them on the brown cardstock and then stamped the clam shell onto them.  If you have an even larger stamp you might consider using 6 inchies.  Stamps are "Under The Sea" by Layers of Color

I'm linking this one to :
The Shabby Tea Room (metal starfish charm)
and Stampin' Sisters for Christ ( A special moment spent with Jesus - when walking on the beach in Jacksonville, it was so peaceful and quite and I would just walk and pray)

This one includes a twinchie and 2 inchies.  Stamps are from "Under The Sea" by Layers of Color.  Are starting to see all the fun options with these and how easy they are to put together??

I'm linking this one to :
Stamptacular Sunday Challenge (more than one stamp)
Papercutz Challenge (anything goes)

This is a twinchie set I created.  I didn't have time to make cards with them.  I used "Butterfly Collector" by Layers of Color.

Here is a close-up of one of them.  I bought some 2"wooden blocks and I was thinking about putting them on those.

I"m linking this one to:
Allsorts (Minature, less than 3")

Here is an Inchie tower I created using 1" wooden blocks.  I created these last year.  I wanted a set with red and black to match my craft room.

Did you know there are stamp companies that sell inchie images?  Lockhart and Inkadinkado.  But you can create an inchie from a larger image by trimming it down.  When I'm trying to decide if part of an image will work as an inchie, I use this little window template:

I lay it over the image to see what part might work.  For instance the 2 ladies are from much larger images by FCD.  The set is called "Leading Ladies".  Isn't the ballerina cute??  She is a cupcake topper image from "Vintage Cupcake" set by Pink Persimmon.  The apples are from one of my fall GinaK sets.  I bet if you started going through all you stamps you would find parts of larger images you could use as well.  The backgrounds behind the 2 ladies are from Inkadinkado.  They sell themed inchie clear stamp sets and you can find them at local craft stores.

Check out Lockharts "Itty Bitty" collection HERE.

So are you ready to make some inchies and twinchies??
You should set up a swap with your stampin' buddies.  Set up the guidelines that require them to create them with card making in mind if that is a concern.  You could ask them to create 3 inchies with the same theme to use on a card.  What fun it would be to see the different interpretations!

I hope you learned something new and are inspired to create something this week.  If you decide to do some inchies or twinchies, let me know.  I would love to see how you were inspired.

Scrapbook Inspiration Challenge : Punches and Dies

Good Morning!!  As I shared with you the other day, I begin posting Scrapbook Inspiration Challenges over at SCS today and I'm so excited.  And this specific challenge is SIC80. I'm sure you can use some of these idea's in your cardmaking. So I will share on my blog as well.  However, if you enjoy scapbooking, then please hop over and join us.  I will be giving away a Creative Cuts and More gift package.  For all the details, check out the thread HERE.  And you can earn an extra point for my August blog candy give-away just by stopping by and saying hi.  Make sure you give me your blogger ID in your message there, so I'll know who to credit it to.
So let's get started.  For the next 2 weeks I am challenging scrappers to use punches and dies in a creative way.  Here is my inspiration piece and a few inspirational photo's of ways to use punches / die.

This is my little guy when he was actually little (he's 22 now).  I have always loved this photo so much.  I have one of my daughter as well.  They were taken at the Christian Private school they attended.  Travis was definitly unique and free spirited.  About this time I was reading a book by Dr. James Dobson called "The Strong Willed Child".  Need I say more, teehee.

Idea #1 is to use a punch around the edges of a mat or frame.  I used a star shaped hand punch to create a one of a kind photo mat for this one.

These are 3 of my neices / nephews.

I used my circle punches from my Making Memories Eyelet Setter set on this one.  It came with 3 different size holes punches and they are perfect for punching holes in area's that a regular punch can't reach.

Idea #2  Stamp on a punch or die shape.
Idea #3 Use a shaped punch to create your own buttons.  I punched the circle 6 times and layered/adhered them together.  To get your holes lined up, punch the circle on a thinner piece of paper, fold it in half and then into quarters, creating a criss cross across the button.  Use these fold lines to help you see where to put your button holes.  After you have them punched on this pieces, line it up over your button and use it as a guide to punch the holes.

Idea #4 Use punched images as mask.

Idea #5  Create a monochromatic patterned paper using your punches.  To make them pop a little more, use a .005 Micron pen to doodle around the edges or ink the edges.  See the four flowers near the top.

Idea #6  Use a punch or die (I used Spellbinders here) with patterned paper or book paper.  I sprayed my bird with Glimmer Mist.  I created the wing using a scalloped corner punch and folded/gathered.

Idea #7  Use a punch on a different medium besides regular paper.  I created the flowers using my Spellbinders die with tissue paper.  Other idea's : cork, acetate, foil or thin metal, vellum, or fabric (paint the back with Gesso first to stiffin it).  And I'm wondering if a Spellbinders would cut through felt??

Idea #8 Add texture to a pre-cut die or punch using an embossing folder.
See the red apple die (Creative Cuts and More)

Idea #9 Embellish a pre-cut die with patterned paper, stamps, glitter, Fun Flock, etc.  I used a pink and white cupcake die (Creative Cuts and More)  for this one.  I stamped this pink cupcake liner with black polka dots.  I trimmed the white cupcake frosting and candle off of the white cupcake die and adhered it to the pink one.  I covered the icing and flame with glitter.  I colored the pink candle with a black marker.

And on this one, I covered the pre-cup party hat die (Creative Cuts and More) with patterned paper, then embellished with the frill at the top and spiral (it came with the hat).
And a few more idea's that I don't have photo's for:
10. Journal on them.
11. Sew across them
12. Piece together several shaped punches to create a new shape.
If you need pre-cut dies, then you should visit Creative Cuts and More.  They have a great selection of shaped dies, cards with shaped windows, 3-D paper projects that are pre-cut and pre-scored, and much more!

Thanks for stopping by today!  I hope you will be inspired to get those punces out and use them on what ever project you want to create.  If you have any creative uses for dies, I would love to see them.

Have a great day!

Back to School Teacher Gift Card and Gift Box

It's that time of year again.  This weekend is the tax free weekend for shopping since the kids here is Spring go back to school next week.  My DH ask if I was going to go out and do any shopping.  I quickly responded "have you lost your mind??".  teehee.  I do not like to shop in crowds and this weekend it going to be crazy with everyone getting ready for the start of new school year.  Instead I thought I would just stay home and create something with the Back to School theme.
Today I'm sharing with you these really cute apple window products from Creative Cuts and More.  It's important to start the school year off right by letting our teachers know how much we appreciate them.  This ensemble includes a card and gift box.  I created the sentiments using word boxes.  I sharing it over on the left column under "Word Art".  Click the link and you will be able to download it and print on an 8.5 x 11" cardstock sheet.  I don't have a way to seperate each sentiment, so you have to print the full sheet, sorry.  But, hey, it's free.  If you choose to download it, please leave me a comment.  I'm just wondering how many people would be interested.

This card comes with the apple window and scalloped border across the front.  I also used an Apple die cut as well.  It's actually attached to the inside of the card so you can see it through the window.  I lined the circle tag on the inside with the one on the outside, so that it can not be seen through the window.  CCM also sells Apple Window Mini Scrapbooks as well.  Check out all their "Apple" products HERE.

These gift boxes are so cute!!  They come with a variety of shaped windows.  It's called Apple Window Square Box 01.  And it comes with the acetate.

Tutorial

To get create a patterned paper panel for the front of the box or card:
Trim your pattern paper down to the size square or rectangle you would like on the front.  Slide the pattern paper inside the card in the position you would want it on the outside.  I secured the one for the box with 2 pieced of tape to keep it in place.  Then trace the window shape on the patterned paper.  Pull patterned paper out and lightly trace another pencil line around the edges of this one, approximately 1/8".  This will be your cut line and will give you a border.

Ink edges of patterned paper panel and along edges of inside of window.  Use a border punch to create a border.  The one I used is by EK Success.  It has this tiny little scalloped border.  Create sentiment tag and adhere.

Fold the edges along the score lines and use a bone folder over them to get a good crease.  Use your Killer Red Tacky Tape (also available at CCM) to adhere the flaps, creating the box top.  Do the same for the bottom portion of the box.  Adhere acetate on the inside of box.  Now that I'm done with mine, I realize that I could have adnered the acetate down on top of the apple window on the outside of the box before adhering my patterned paper.  This would have been neater.

I hope you were inspired today!!
I will add more "Word Art" over in the left column as I create them.  They are free, but I would appreciate a comment letting me know you downloaded, if you do.

I hope you are having a beautifully blessed weekend!!
hugs,
Melisa

Sun, Surf and Sand

Good Morning!  I have lots to share today and would like to begin by letting you know that I will begin co-hosting the Scrapbook Inspirations Challenges over at SCS starting on Monday!  Did you know that SCS had Scrapbook challenges??  They have several.

You can check out my challenge thread at HERE.  And you can check out all the Scrapbook Challenges HERE.

Today is Creative Belli Challenge day.
The goal of the Creative Belli challenges is to encourage you to use up those old, forgotton supplies.  Not hard to find in my scraproom because I've been hoarding for years.  We would love to have you join us and play along HERE!

This weeks challenge is "circles" and "metal".  There is a sketch as well, but it is optional.  Well the circles are kinda obvious.  I used a metal tag clip and metal brads.  The background paper is by My Minds's Eye So Sophie collection.  The scalloped circle is Bazzill.  It just didn't look right as a solid color, so I grabbed my swirly stamps and created my own dp background.  That's the wonderful thing about stamps!  So many options.

So I decided to do a layout.  And chose to use my Layers of Color "Under the Sea" stamp set.  These images are so cute and worked just perfectly for this layout.  These photo's are from 2000.  My daughter was 10 (photo to far left) and my son was 12.  The 2 extra's are my neices.  We have never lived close enough for us to be able to spend time with them.  So I used to have them for a week every summer.  And go to the beach was always a part of our fun summer activities.

We would love to have you join us.  Hop over to the Creative Belli blog and check out what the other designers have created to inspire!

I hope all of you have a wonderful day filled with blessings!
