Gina K. Designs "Petals and Wings"

Hello friends.  I hope you are all well.  Hope the weather is warming up where ever you are.  It's been wonderful here except with the Spring comes the pollen and allergies. You can find all the info about my card at the bottom of the post.

Today I want to take a minute to share a personal testimony with you as well.  It is the desire of my heart to always bring honor and glory to my Savior and my life has changed so much since December, that I feel He is leading me to share with you.  I don't consider myself a great writer or communicator so I am trusting that He will lead me in writing this.

Some of you may be hurting, and desperate for change in your life.  And I want to share how God is healing me and has changed my life.  I'm not a bible scholar or saint, nor would I consider myself a mature christian or anyone knowledgeable enough to council others.  I certainly don't have all the answers, but thank goodness I know a God who does.  I'm just a regular gal who loves God and wants to share that with others.  Who gets up everyday and struggles with the same sin and problems you do.  I think too many times Christians are hesitate to share their problems / sin with others.  They want everyone to think they have it all figured out and sometimes we are afraid others will judge us.  So I'm putting my heart out there today to share something very personal with you, not because I seek your sympathy but because you need to know how awesome God is!

Life has really improved around our house.  My mom is slowly improving since her surgery and is doing well enough that we got her moved into her own little apartment.  I am so thankful for answered prayers and for all of you who have prayed for us the last 4 months.  We moved her here back in December thinking that we had her lined up for her to move into and apartment of her own shortly after arriving.  Living with us was never an option.  After getting her here they told us they would not accept her because of her bad credit ...  imagine our shock.  She was on the list for 2 other HUD apartments and they denied her as well.  So we were starting from scratch, and not sure when we would be able to find her something since she had already been rejected 3 times.

What God taught me through this experience ...

Just to share a little background ... my mom was a single mom and an alcoholic.  My dad was not a part of my life.  There was a lot of hurt and neglect.  Children should feel loved and safe growing up.  And unfortunately things that happen to us as children can affect us as adults.  My  relationship with my mother has always been very strained.   We have tried to help her so many times in the past.  But frankly sometimes people don't want to change and you can not force them.  Her health began to really go down hill the last couple of years, and it became apparent I was going to have to step up and help.  This was not what I wanted to do.  It would not be easy.  And I wasn't sure HOW I was going to do it emotionally, but I felt like it was what God was calling me to do.  Sometimes when someone hurts you over and over again, you build a wall.  I didn't feel any love for her at all.  The relationship was so strained that seeing that she was calling me caused anxiety, and hugging her made me cringe.  I dreaded holidays if I was going to have to see her.  I'm just trying to share with you how bad it really was.  Sometimes as Christians we think we are trucking along, living like God wants us to, but maybe hiding away just one little something and refusing to deal with it.  We rationalize that it's ok to hide away this one little thing because there are so many other things we do that are good.   Well for me that was my relationship with my mother.  I always said I had forgiven her .... but really had I ?? if I loathed her that much???  I know now that God wanted me to deal with it and not in just the same town, but the same house.  I was so broken, and stressed, wondering how we were ever going to work all this out.  We had tried helping her and letting her live with us in the past and it did not go well.  She has some mental issues as well.  And I was stuck in between my mother and husband wondering every day if someone was going to explode.   I had no where else to go but to God.  I began praying for Him to speak to my heart ... to change my heart and help me to see my mother differently, to help me forgive and love her as a Christian should.

First He reminded me that everything I have is His.  My house is His and if He wants to use it to help someone less fortunate I had to accept that.  I began praying fervently not just in general for God to take care of this problem, not just that He would open up another option for somewhere else for her to live, because that's the natural response we have to something like this ....  but that He would teach ME whatever it was I needed to learn from this situation and help to change my heart. My desire to live and love like He wants me to has to be bigger than my selfish desire to continue to continue like I had been.  I knew there was now way my mother was going to change and become this lovable little angel.   But I believed and knew that God could help me to change.  Sometimes we want to pray for God to change the other person we think is the problem ... but we don't want God to tell us what we need to change about ourselves.  We think that if they would just change ... then we could love them.  But that's not the kind of love God has for us .... it's not conditional, thank goodness!  Because there is nothing we can do to earn it.   Not everyone is easy to love.  The easy thing to do is to avoid/ignore the problem, tuck it away like it doesn't exist ... but like in my life it may catch up with you and you may have to deal with it.  God decided it was time for me to deal with my un-forgiveness.  I began reading a book by Beth Moore "Praying God's Word".  WOW!  God has used this book to speak to me like never before.  I'm breaking though my stronghold of un-forgiveness, among other things.  I know it may always be a struggle, but the joy and peace I have now is amazing.  Seriously .... God is MY Xanax!  The feeling of relief when we finally let things go and give it to Him is amazing. Sometimes I have to get up, pray and give it to Him several times a day.  It has changed me in such a way that others have noticed as well.  My daughter and husband have been so surprised at how I have stepped up and dealt with things, and I give God all the honor and glory.  There is no way I could have broke through all the anger / resentment / un-forgiveness / anxiety regarding this with out Him.  He is changing my heart.  And I'm excited about what else He is going to teach me!

Please just know that if you are hurting that God loves you, wants to have a relationship with you.  Not the kind where you show up for church every week and think you are doing all the right things, volunteering and serving. But one where you are depending on Him, talking to Him about everything, reading His word, seeking His council ....a real relationship.   A personal relationship just between you and Him.  You will begin to hear His voice and it will change your life.  I hope that you will open up to God and let Him help you with challenges in your life as well. Not sure where to get started?  Email me at luv_2_stamp@yahoo.com

I hope you have a fabulous week!!

Scrapbooking with Elle's Studio

12 x 12 Layout
(click on layout for larger view)

Hello friends.  I found some time to scrapbook yesterday!  It's been a month since I've done any crafting and it was so wonderful to just relax and be creative for a change.

I'm loving the trend of "clustering" in scrapbooking.  I recently discovered a company that creates lots of little paper embellishments that are perfect for clustering.  Elle's Studio carries stamps as well and that sealed the deal for me. I LOVE that the sentiments / journaling are versatile and can be used for so many different photo themes.

There are lots of opportunities to win free stuff over on the blog HERE.  I'm not sure if you are required to use Elle's Studio products in the sketch challenges or not.  It doesn't say you have to. This project is for their April 3 challenge to create a layout "using Elle's Studio tabbed tags as a frame".

There are weekly sketch challenges on Thursday's and other challenges on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday's.

For the layout above I used the following Elle's Studio products :

The Sweet Life Tidbits
The Sweet Life Snippets
The Sweet Life Cutouts
Serendipity 3" Circles
Daily Details stamp set

Washi Tape : My Mind's Eye "Lost and Found 3".    Patterned Paper : Pink Paislee "Portfolio".
OLD supplies from my stash - Rub-ons by Scenic Route and 7 Gypsies "Fortunes".     Flower : Prima.

Cross your fingers and toes for me .... my wish list is long!

This layout was also designed for the sketch challenge over at Creative Scrapper.

12 x 12 Layout

I designed this one using a sketch from Delightful Inspiration.

I used a stencil, modeling paste and acrylic paint to create the stars in the background.  Most of the embellishments used are stickers.  I did dig out some old chipboard stars as well.  Patterned paper and sticker embellishments are Fancy Pants "Park Bench".  I wish I had some of the other embellishments in this line!!  Love them!  Aren't those little paper bags / tags and buttons too stinken' cute.  But my LSS only had the paper and stickers.

Mixed Media
I did get my March ATC's done for the 52 card Pick-up Class / group, but haven't had time to post them.  I think I took some step by step photo's so hopefully I will have a tutorial to share as well!

Cards
I'm working on some 10 minute cards for a Take Ten deadline.  So hope to share those soon as well.

Hope you have been finding lots of time to craft!

Mixed Media Background Tutorial ! 4x4 Mini Canvas

 4" x 4" Canvas

Hello friends.  Today I want to share a 4 x 4" canvas with you and a tutorial on how you can create the background and these little tissue paper flowers.

Don't have time to make one yourself??  I have some of these 4" x 4" canvas' with easel for sale if anyone is interested.  You have a couple of choices for phrases.  1.  Be You,  2. Enjoy LIfe,  3. Live Life with Purpose.

I was going to open and etsy store, but things have been a little stressful since my mother moved in.  Maybe after we get her settled I can get back to that.  If you are interested in purchasing one, they are $20 plus shipping. You can email me at luv_2_stamp@yahoo.com.

To create the background I used 4 different color acrylic paints and an old credit / gift card.  Basically you squirt a little paint across (horizontally) the canvas then use the card to pull the paint up and down vertically until you get the look you want.  Then turn the canvas and do it the other way if needed.  It just takes practice until you get the look you want.

I started by applying a full coat of the lighter - Tropic Bay Blue with a foam brush.  After that dried I used the technique described above with the darker - Bahama Blue.  Since I only wanted a small amount of the green, I didn't apply as much of that.

Next I did white and didn't like that look - too much white.

So I added more blue.  Remember you want small amounts of the under coats to show through so that the canvas looks distressed.  So keep layering until you get a look you like.  If you are having a hard time getting that distressed look just by dragging the paint around .... then use a little sand paper (after it is completely dried) to rub off a little of the top layers and reveal some of the layers underneath.

Once you are happy with your background ... distress the edges of the canvas with white paint.

Adhere patterned paper or tissue paper (Pink Paislee - Daily Junque) across the bottom of the canvas as grass.

Distress the background more with a script stamp image.  You can do this by randomly inking a script stamp or use a Rollagraph.  I love the Rollagraph because I have control of rolling just a little of the image and lifting quickly.  If you need a stamp option - then Pink Persimmon sales a great small (ATC size) script image HERE.

Larger images are great for bigger projects, but because this is a 4 x 4" canvas, smaller script will work best because you want that barely there look.  Less is more in this case.  And always practice first on scrap paper.  If your ink is really bold, you may want to stamp a little off and then stamp on the canvas.  If you accidentally apply too much, heat set it and try applying more paint to cover up your script.

I have to tell you creating these little tissue paper flowers took a long time, but I do love them.  I purchased colored tissue paper, but you could always use white and paint them after you have created the flower.

Depending on how large you want your flowers, and how tightly you twist the tissue paper, the size of the strips you cut may vary.  Any where from 1/2" - 1 1/4" will be good.  After you have cut a strip, twist it vertically so you have a long piece of twisted tissue paper.  Then you want to wrap the strips around in a spiral to create the flowers.  As I'm wrapping, I'm twisting the strip as well.  Not all of mine looked good enough to use and I got faster and better at it the more I made.  I use Aleene's Tachy Glue because it so inexpensive.  I'm sure there are easier ways to do it.  I've seen others use "Glubbers" by Cosmo Cricket and I think you can buy them at Joann's.  But they are probably for larger flowers.

After the glue was dry I sprayed them with spray ink.  I was trying to get some shadowing.  I used spray ink on the yellow and orange because the tissue paper was washed out and I wanted a brighter color.

Next I created teeny-tiny leaves and stems from pattern paper.  I doodled them on and then cut them out.

Next I figured out placement for each of the flowers and stems.  BEFORE I glued the flowers on, I used a pencil to lightly dash around each flower so I would know where they went and then lifted them off.  Doodle with a black pen using the pencil guidelines.  Now is a good time to go ahead and doodle around the edges of the canvas and along the top of the grass if you want doodle lines.

This is a major tip you have to remember : You have to do any doodling you want to do before you put the oil pastels on.  Pens will not work over the oil pastels.  It could run your pen.

Next I rubbed on oil pastel colors using my finger over the dashed area's.  If you try to do this after you glue the flowers on ... you will have a hard time getting the color right up against the flower.  You want it to look like a halo or shadow coming from behind the flower.

Glue the flowers and just the top of the stem (under the flower) down.  So you leave the stem hanging freely. You want to be able to adhere part of the leaves from behind the stems.  Rub some green oil pastel over the tissue paper grass to add some shadowing.

Decided where you want your leaves and adhere them.  Adhere stems.  If you want to add green shadow with oil pastel along the stem, it might be easier to add a little before adhering the leaves / stems.  I did rub a little of my green oil pastel on the leaves as well to add some shadow.  Use a black "sketch and wash" pencil to add more shadowing.  These are pencils that apply color and then you can brush a little water over them to smear them around a little.

Hope you were inspired to give this technique a try!
Have a fabulous week,
Melisa

A couple of Gina K. Design cards

Hello friends.  I'm so glad it's Saturday.  We are hoping to fit a bike ride in later today with our daughter.  It's beautiful in Texas right now.  We are having our spring with high's in the 70's most days.  I spent some time organizing photo's this week, since I'm trying to get back into it on a regular basis.  The problem is that I love so many of the scrapbook products I see .... but so many of my photo's from years ago were in color .... and don't match.  Apparently orange and blue were colors my son looked great in!  I think I have to get over that feeling that everything has to match and just go for it.  I need grandchildren and more black and white photo's teehee.

I used to store my photo's in these plastic "Sterilite" drawers because it seemed like an easy way to thumb through them.  They were pretty much organized by year ... but a lot were not.  Sometimes I would pull multiple photo's out trying to match them up ... and then never file them back.  So there was a catch all drawer.  So I have filed 20 years of photo's in photo albums the last couple of months.  WHEW!  I have given up on an notion that I will scrapbook them all.  And who would want to sit down and look at that many scrapbook albums anyway.  I'm excited that I have them out of drawers and in albums where my family can flip through them and look at them.

I do have a couple of cards to share today I designed using some Gina K. Designs images.  I used "Retro Boutique"  on this one.  Isn't that dress so cute.  I wanted it to be something you would want to pull out of the closet for a special event.  I loved popping up the dress to make it 3-D.  It's hard to see, but I added a little black party streamer to create a ruffle along the bottom.  I also added some beaded trim (Hobby Lobby).  The patterned paper is from Hobby Lobby.

I used "Garden Fresh" for this card.  I thought the plaid ruffle trim and raffia gave it a cute farm fresh feel.  This set comes with more cute fruit / veggies and phrases.

I hope you have a fun and fabulous weekend!
hugs, Melisa

Extreme Boy Layout

Hello friends!  Today I'm sharing more layouts I created for February challenges.   This is my son, Travis when he was 14.  He made it through the skateboard phase with only 1 ER visit.  We had a fabulous outdoor skateboard park in Jacksonville, Kona, with these HUGE, steep sided, concrete bowls.  Often I find myself taking a deep breathe and holding it as he took off down the side of one of them.

I'm excited about this one because I used a really old stamp set that I had never used, "Extreme Boy" by Junkitz.  I also used "Stars of Worn" by Unity, and a distressed tags from the "Timeless Tags" set by Stampendous.  I combined those with some fun Basic Grey "Fact" paper pad and Die Cuts / Transparencies paper embellishments (yellow and green tickets).  I used a star stencil as well.

I was inspired by a sketch over at Sketches with a Twist.

And I added orange tinted (mixed with acrylic paint) modeling paste for a challenge over at 2Peas's.

Other challenges I'm linking to :

Inspired by : (thur)

Stampin for the Weekend ( fri) : distressing.  I distressed the edges with black ink.

Basic Grey Challenges (sat) : "favorite ..."  One of my son's favorite things to do growing up was skateboarding

February Faith Art Artist Trading Cards

Hello friends.  Today I'm sharing the next 4 ATC's (Artist Trading Cards).  In case you are new to the term .... ATC's are little 2.5" x 3.5" works of art.  I created these along with the other ladies in the "52 Card Pickup" class / group.  If I keep moving at this pace I will have my revolving ATC holder filled up before I know it!

These days a lot of people spend a lot of time doing physical activities in order to "transform" their bodies into what they think it should be.  Exercise is certainly a great thing.  But I'm wondering how much time we spend transforming who we are "by the renewing of our mind".  When we spend more time focusing our minds on God and His word we see a different kind of transformation.  Often helping us to become someone we didn't even know we could be.  A transformation  that can allow you to forgive someone you never thought you could ...   that allows you to feel peace at times when in the past you would have felt stressed ...   that allows you to feel joy during difficult times in your life ... and more.  I LOVE this verse and all the power it packs!!

I'm linking this one to the buttterfly challenge at "All Sorts".

Just a few words from a great song by King and Country.  I get up everyday and hope that something that I say or do can be proof for others that His love is real.
Listen HERE.

Another one of my favorite songs because of the lyrics.  Even though we will never be worthy, and will always be sinful, He knows it and still loves us!!
Listen HERE.

I'm linking this one to Word Art Wednesday's "love" challenge and the "tie one on" challenge at Unruly Paper Arts.

Trying to achieve perfection results in my defeat.  I have to remind myself often that what I'm doing will never be perfect and that's ok.

Hope you all have a great week and find some time to get crafty!
hugs,
Melisa

PROJECT DETAILS

ATC #1
Stamp image : "Tiny Butterfly" and "Faith Text Background" Stampabilities (Hobby Lobby)

The background for this card was created by rubbing on Tumbled Glass and Mustard Seed Distress Inks with one of the Ranger Inkssential blending tools.  Dye ink drys fast so I sprayed my paper first with matte acrylic sealer so that the ink would blend better vs. soaking into the paper. I think it helped and I like how the blue and yellow blended together.  I stamped the background with the "Faith Text Background" by Stampabilities (Hobby Lobby) with black pigment ink (Tsukineko VersaFine Onyx Black).  I stamped the butterflies on white cardstock with Momento Tuxedo Black and colored with Copic Markers.  I used an oil pastel to grunge up the edges.

ATC #2
Stamps  : old Technique Tuesday (heart) and Inkadinkado (wings)
Rollagraph Tool with SU stamp wheel (music notes on background)
Butterfly punch : Martha Stewart

The background on this one was created with watercolor paper.  I spritzed the paper first with water, stamped with watered down blue acrylic paint and a chapstick lid.  If the paint does not run, then you can spray it again with more water.

You can see more ways to use acrylic paint on your projects on this recent blog post HERE.

ATC #3

The background on this one was created like the one above using pink acrylic paint, a chapstick lid and a small lid from a hand sanitizer bottle.  The flower petals colored with water color paint and the center with Copic Markers.

ATC #4
Stamps : Gina K. Designs "Springtime Silhouette

The background for this one was created a while back.  You can check out the tutorial HERE
The butterfly was stamped and embossed on yellow cardstock.

2 Silly Girls

Hello friends!  Happy Friday.  I hope you all had a great week.  Today I want to share a scrapbook layout with you.  The girl in the blue over-alls is my very silly daughter and this was her 9th birthday.  We didn't have big parties every year ... so when we did I tried to make if fun.  We did a sleep over with 5 of her girlfriends which left me exhausted by the time it was all wrapped up.  They painted tee shirts, played games, one of them with balloons.  I'm not sure what kind of dance they were doing in the photo's.  I looked at these pictures and thought "what are they doing with balloons in their hair?? and where did my daughter get those shoes??".  That is not the pair she started out with, teehee.  They also made a music video which my daughter choreographed.  The next morning we got up and went roller skating.  I think birthday #9 was a memorable one!

I went through all of my scrapbook challenges and when I seen the My Mind's Eye challenge I had to do it.  The challenge was to scrapbook Feb 2.  Well that just happens to be my daughter's birthday!  So I couldn't pass it up.  I have some old and new My Mind's Eye paper, some 6 x 6 pads, and 2 of their stamp sets.  So while the MME challenges was really a challenge .... finding paper and embellishments to coordinate with one of her birthdays without any shopping was the challenge.

Since I didn't have a lot of coordinating embellishments I turned to my punches and made my own tags. I put 3 tags in a pocket behind one of the photo's, to add some journaling and they worked as embellishments as well.

I was also inspired by the sketch challenge over at Pretty Little Studio.  I felt a little guilty playing along because I don't have any of their product, so I'm hoping that's ok.  I LOVE their product and follow their blog.  You should see how long my wish list is.  CUTE retro styled products!  Hopefully I will win some!  They don't say there is a prize ... but they announce a winner .... so if there's a winner there has to be a prize, teehee.   Check out the store HERE.

and lastly ...

I'm playing along with the ""Topography" challenge over at "Challenge Me Happy".  I have to tell you I WORKED HARD for this one!  I picked out different fonts on my computer, figured out how I wanted the letters staggered, printed them on different colored paper, then hand cut those little letters.  And all to find out I couldn't link it up.  : (  .  To enter their challenge you can only link up to their challenge!  I was a little disappointed after all that work ... but the challenge helped me design the page the way it is, so that's good.

I worked so hard on this layout yesterday, but finished too late to photograph and once again missed out on the MME deadline!  : )  I didn't realize I had to upload it yesterday as well.  Thanks you so very much for stopping by and listening to me rant today!
hugs, Melisa

January Faith Art - Artist Trading Cards

Hello friends!  A quick post today to share my January artist trading cards for the "52 Card Pick-up" group.  I didn't sign up for the class til late january so I'm playing catch up.  The class / group is taught by Stephanie Ackerman.  Stephanie had the idea to alter a deck of playing cards.  I've been working on trying to fill up my Revolving ATC holder for a while now, so all my cards will be for that.  If you check out Stephanie's blog you will see she loves faith art and the grunge look.  She is known for using hearts as her main element on projects.   If you need some inspiration to get you started on a project like this then please join the class.  Details HERE.  There are lots of creative ways you can use your cards beyond the standard ATC's.

Create them to add to the front of cards or scrapbook layouts.  Make a mini album out of them.  One member is doing a set for her grandson.  Use some of them as book marks.  The sky's the limit.

As a part of the class she creates an ATC each week, and share's some techniques or idea's that she uses to create hers.  But you can do what ever you like.  I have a lot of stamps .... so my first cards will focus on how I can use them to create faith art cards .... like the Hero Arts chair image above.  And I LOVE butterflies, so I will try to make them the thing that I try to work in as much as possible.

Normally ATC's are 2.5" x 3.5" and if I were doing a swap I would stick to that.  But since this is for my Revolving ATC holder, I'm making them a little wider to compensate for having to punch the notches to attach them.  So I am adding 3/8".

The other fun thing about doing them for me is that I can hang things over the edges without the constraints of the standard 2.5" x 3.5" size, like the ruffle on card #1.

Tips of idea's for creating my cards :

Card #1
1.  Spray book paper and add random stamp patterns in black ink.
2.  Stamp heart on green tissue paper.  Use tissue paper to create a ruffle and then stamp polka dots over it.
3. Use oil pastel to add that grunge look (Stephanie shares another product that she uses for this).
Stamp Image : SU

Card #2
I created this background a while back and shared the tutorial HERE.
Stamp Image : Hero Arts

Card #3
This one is just patterned paper with script stamp over it.  One of the things I like to use to add just a little random pattern to a background is the "Rollagraph" stamp wheel by Clear Snap.  I know that SU sells them as well.  It allows you to lightly apply the image / ink in small area's. So when I talk about randomly stamping the background with an image I've either used my Rollagraph wheel or added ink to a background stamp only in small area's.  Hopefully that makes sense.
Stamps : Gina K. Designs

Card #4
Consider creating a background by typing the words over and over again and then printing them on your paper.  I used words from a new Christian song by Colton Dixon "You Are"

On the back of the card I'm either printing the full bible verse or some personal journaling about what the verse means to me.

Hope you have a blessed day!!
hugs, Melisa
